Hostile architecture and Hostile Architect
If you searched for benches, spikes, or city design, you want the term hostile architecture. If you searched for a tower-defense game on Steam, you want Hostile Architect by SludgeBit. This page only separates them. It does not explain the design practice.
Source notes
Steam identifies the game and its developer; Wikipedia describes the design term, and Ashenspire’s own Bandcamp page identifies the album. These are distinct entities. The relationship between the title and the design term below is this guide’s interpretation of the game’s official pitch.
Two different things
Hostile architecture is the name used for built features that guide or block behavior, often discussed in relation to people sleeping or skating in public space. The English Wikipedia article covers it and has many language editions. A Reddit community, r/HostileArchitecture, uses the same term. Those are the places to read about the idea.
Hostile Architect is a video game: Steam app 4768160, developer and publisher SludgeBit, Coming Soon, Windows and macOS. The official pitch puts you in charge of a trap-filled side-scrolling stage. Reading the title as a play on the design term is our interpretation, not a verified statement from the studio.
Other collisions
Ashenspire, a band from Glasgow, released an album called Hostile Architecture in 2022 on Bandcamp. Several itch.io projects also use the title Hostile Architecture. None of them is the Steam game. A Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead tool uses the game’s exact name; that split has its own page.
Questions
Which one can I wishlist?
Only the game, on Steam. The design term is not a product, and the album is music.
